About StackSMB

StackSMB is a software comparison and review site built for small and midsize business operators. We cover payroll, accounting, HR, time tracking, and adjacent back-office tools — the software categories that affect how a business pays its people, manages its finances, and runs its day-to-day operations.

Our job is to help you make a faster, better-informed software decision. Not to push a product, not to manufacture enthusiasm, and not to tell you one tool is the best for every situation.

Who this site is for

StackSMB is built for business owners, operations managers, and office leads at companies with roughly 1 to 50 employees. People who need to evaluate software quickly, understand trade-offs clearly, and make a decision that will hold up for a few years — without spending weeks researching it themselves.

If you are a solo operator choosing your first payroll tool, a growing team replacing a system you have outgrown, or an operations lead trying to consolidate your back-office stack, this site is built for you.

What we cover

  • Payroll software — full-service payroll, contractor payroll, payroll with HR add-ons
  • Accounting software — bookkeeping, invoicing, financial reporting
  • HR software — hiring, onboarding, benefits administration, people management
  • Time tracking — hourly team scheduling, project time, attendance management
  • Adjacent tools — expense management, invoicing, and operational software where it overlaps with the above

We do not cover every software category. We cover the ones that matter most to small business operators making back-office decisions.

How to use this site

Start with a category hub if you are early in your research — payroll, accounting, HR, or time tracking. Each hub explains what the category covers, who it is for, and what the key buying criteria are.

If you already know which products you are comparing, go directly to a comparison or versus page. If you are evaluating a specific vendor, go to its review page.

Every comparison page includes a clear recommendation by use case, a trade-off summary, and a methodology note. We do not crown a universal winner where one does not exist.

What this site does not do

StackSMB is informational. Nothing on this site is legal, tax, accounting, payroll, or HR advice. Software comparisons are not a substitute for reviewing a vendor's current terms, pricing, and support documentation before you purchase.

Vendor pricing, features, and availability change. We maintain a review cycle to keep pages current, but you should verify details directly with any provider before making a purchase decision.

How editorial independence works

Some links on this site are affiliate links. If you click through and purchase or sign up, we may earn a commission. That does not change how we evaluate software. Vendors cannot pay for a positive review or a guaranteed ranking position.

Our full affiliate disclosure explains exactly how commercial relationships work on this site. Our editorial methodology explains how we select, evaluate, and update the software we cover.

Corrections and contact

If you find a factual error — a price that has changed, a feature that no longer exists, a comparison that is out of date — please let us know. We take accuracy seriously and will update pages when errors are confirmed.
